Maybe it is just me, but I love watching a movie and getting to say, "I've been there!" Having a connection with the place a movie was filmed seems to make it more important to me in some way. Many movies, documentaries, and television shows have been shot in Costa Rica. Some good, some bad, and hell, some just plain ugly...
I threw together the list below to provide a few examples.
Directed by Ridley Scott, staring Gérard Depardieu and Sigourney Weaver among others, 1492 is about Columbus' discovery of the Americas. Personally, I don't love it or hate it.
Apocalypto
Mel Gibson's controversial Oscar nominated film Apocalypto is about the fall of the Mayan empire. An interesting fantasy, I felt that this movie was "a little" one sided. The story was oversimplified but perhaps anything deeper would have been difficult to cover in a 2 hour movie. Love the twist at the end, think it speaks to human nature in general.
Basic
An action movie with John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and plenty of other big name stars. Haven't seen it, maybe will watch if it comes on cable some day. From the previews it looks like Samuel L. Jackson does what he does best, playing a bad ass. While John Travolta chases him around the jungle.
The Blue Butterfly
A heart warming film staring William Hurt, The Blue Butterfly is based on a true story. A young boy who is dying of a brain tumor, his last wish is to capture a rare blue butterfly for his collection. The trip takes the two deep into the rainforest.
Caribe
A real Costa Rican movie, this film is based on the Caribbean coast. About a love triangle between a banana plantation owner and two women. The movie touches on political topics including off shore oil drilling. I'd look for this on DVD, it's worth seeing.
Carnival in Costa Rica
From 1947, Carnival in Costa Rica is about 2 pairs of lovers who try to avoid an arranged marriage during Carnival in Costa Rica. Haven't seen it, but want too, seems like the singing, dancing and costumes might be fun.
The Celestine Prophecy
Takes place in Peru, filmed in Costa Rica. The movies is based on a supposedly life changing book.
The Chosen One
Directed by Rob Schneider.
Congo
Years since I've seen this movie, Costa Rica plays the African Congo. Gorillas, Laura Linney and Tim Curry.
Costa Rican Summer
A Joel Silverman movie, enough said.
Endless Summer 2
Lovely surf movie that will make you dream of packing your bags and hitting the road.
Funny Money
Gestation
A Costa Rican film, look forward to seeing it.
Jurassic Park
Thanks to my little brothers I've seen this movie too many times to count. Costa Rican's often complain about a scene in "San Jose." The capital is depicted with chickens running around... not the case.
Monsters
Silverman's Surf School
Another Joel Silverman movie.
Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams
A kids movie by Robert Rodriguez, staring Antonio Banderas, Steve Buscemi, Carla Gugino and more. Haven't seen it, maybe I'll rent it if I have to babysit
TropiX
Deep Blue
Sharkwater
Step Into Liquid
Zen and Zero
I’m a Celebrity- Get Me Out of Here
The Hills
House Hunters International
Man vs. Wild - Costa Rican Rainforest
Temptation Island 2
The Tribe
I'm sure this list is missing plenty of other movies, documentries, or TV shows filmed in Costa Rica. If you have a favorite, please add to the comments!
